The Shunned House H P Lovecraft 9781477583128 Books

This is a creepy story. It’s a short one, only 33 pages, about a house that has been shunned by the community due to the strange things that took place in it during its first 100 years. The house dates back to the 1700’s. No children were ever born alive in the house and all of its inhabitants fell victim to some strange, wasting type of illness while living in the house. There are many tales and speculations about the cause of these events. The narrator had played in the house as a boy while it was unoccupied and as an adult has a renewed interest in the history of the place. He and his uncle set out to solve the mystery of the Shunned House.

I found the story fascinating, partly because I have an interest in odd bits of history, and also because it is so well written. By today’s standards it is not particularly graphic but still gave me the creepy-crawlies. So, if you’re looking for something a little different to read, you should check out this story.

The Shunned House H P Lovecraft 9781477583128 Books Reviews

An interesting, quick story. Two men research the unlucky and deathly history of a house. The search brings them to the basement.... ahhhh, beware.

A fun, spooky story. I wish the ghostly parts had been longer and more detailed. Creepy good though.
I like this story for two reasons the first is that it is so devoted to the history of the house, setting the stage with dread and curiosity. This makes the story itself a haunted house unto itself; a construct we at once both fear and yearn to investigate.

The second reason is the reason I love all good Lovecraft the startling realizations. Lovecraft makes you work, here, to determine what is said, seen, and discovered by figuring out the wordiness and seeing what he is showing you in the narrative. When you piece it all together, it is a horrifying reward.

Worth a read for the excellent price of zero dollars.
Hovercraft had a way of painting a creepy word picture in this short tale. There is nothing honey here and nothing particularly scary, but he masterfully builds up a sort of sit at the edge of your seat suspense that keeps you guessing about what is next.
Full disclosure I adore Lovecraft. Every word he's written. As far as I'm concerned, if he wants to write about ageless creatures living at the bottom of rural wells, angry ghosts terrifying the students and scholars of Providence, "lost races" (embarrassing) populating undiscovered continents, or, obviously, mutant sea monsters emerging from tide pools, ocean depths, or, I guess, rural wells again, it's all worthwhile. I can't put it down. I have one thing to say about this book "Dr. Elihu Whipple." Thank you, , for making this story available for free.
Very creepy! Very Lovecraft. He really knew how to plant images in your brain. I had a nightmare the night I finished it. Evil lurks beneath the surface in an old house where all those who live there see strange things, go mad and sometimes even die. The latest owner doesn't even try to rent or sell it. Two set out to destroy the evil and one of them is destroyed in the process.
There are lots of haunted house books and stories around. They run the gamut from moody little bits of Victorian spine tingling to mega-bloody gore fests. This story, though, has a special appeal that is unique and intriguing. It is not just a story, it is more like a master class lesson in writing dread, threat and horror.

We don't really have a plot. Character development is not a priority. Not a great deal "happens". This is a portrait of a house and a recounting of its tainted history. It is a demonstration of how to write horror, terror and implacable creeping menace. It's entertaining and it delivers a full measure of Lovecraft's special supremely well-crafted style of crazy weird fiction.

Here's an interesting exercise. If you found this book on the site the book was displayed with just the bland red and yellow generic cover they use for out-of-copyright freebies. Read the first chapter of this story in which the house is described and its miasmatic decay is first addressed. Now, go to the Hardcover edition site and call up the original Virgil Finlay cover illustration from "Weird Tales" that appears there. That picture is absolutely one hundred per cent what you likely have in your head after reading Lovecraft's first chapter. I'm not impressed by the fact that one picture can replace a thousand words; I'm amazed that only one thousand words from Lovecraft can so successfully paint a picture like that.

So, if you'd like a first taste or just a little touch of H.P. Lovecraft, this is a very nice place to begin. A happy find.
The plot is simple you understand right from the start that the house is haunted, something horrific is in the cellar, and the narrator is going to explore it. But the plot's simplicity allows Lovecraft to better spend his time by constructing a powerful atmosphere of horror. His exploration of the house's history adds authenticity, and contributes towards the book's dread-laced mood. Although the ending may not do exact justice to the build-up, it is still a decent pay-off for Lovecraft's superb craftmanship.
