Autobiographic memories from the Holocaust in Slovakia

Giora Amir was born in Czehoslovakia in 1928.
When the country was divided in 1939 into German protectorate in Bohemia and Moravia, Slovakia became a country under quasi German rule, a country governed by racial discrimination and under Nazi protection. When the deportation from Slovakia to ghettos in Poland started, he escaped to Hungary - only to return to Slovakia a few years later, after the German army invaded Hungary and commenced the deportation of Hungarian Jews to Auschwitz.

20th century history merges with personal memories into a gripping and inspiring life story

A simple life is an intimate and absorbing report of childhood in Slovakia under racial discrimination; the dangerous escape to Hungary and the return to Slovakia amidst the war; surviving in the woods of Tatra mountains; and, eventually, making a new beginning and a new life from the wreckage.

A Simple Life eBook Giora Amir Reviews

This is a memoir which rambles moves oddly through time and uses "sealed their fate" in some variation too much. I had a hard time getting through this and didn't read the last section. I've read other Holocaust memoirs which are much more interesting and easier to read. Definitely would be improved with editing.
I really enjoyed reading about Giora and the life he has led. Would recommend to my friends to read!
I couldn't get into it. Too detailed, too many times telling the same ol story. Too many people to remember, never finished. Boring
It was good story. I am quite familiar with the persecution of Jews during World War II. I was not as familiar with the aftermath of those who moved to Israel. So from that aspect, it was informative for me.
"A Simple Life" is a very apt title in some ways but very untrue in others. Fleeing from Nazi soldiers, seeing your friends and family shipped off to death camps, struggling just to stay alive, depending on the kindness of strangers are not "simple" components. Inspiring story with an eventual happy ending,
I interviewed Giora for the documentary - 999 The First Transport to Auschwitz, which he was a witness to. My research on those young women who were sent to Auschwitz before any Jewish man and Giora knew many of the girls, who he had grown up with and gone to school with. He writes about many things in regards to Slovakia and the rise of the Hlinka guards and Nazi party, as well as the community he knew and grew up in. A very moving and informative piece of history that I found captivating. Heather Dune Macadam, Rena's Promise A Story of Sisters in Auschwitz
This was an interesting account of Giora's life. He went through some tough times. If you are interested in the Holocaust and reading an account of what life was like then, do yourself a favor and get this book. It's a page turner, super interesting, and an easy read.
A story like this is what I consider to be very personal and intimate. It's a true story about Giora Amir during World War Two.
The World War Two German invasion is a horrifying topic people like to keep in the back of their heads and never come back to.
Why?
In my opinion because it's scary and way too real. It's terrifying to know people actually did that and that if we're not careful, it could potentially happen again. Reading the events of the invasion, the foul treatment from the Nazi's, and this boy's escape to Hungary brought tears to my eyes.
As a privileged American woman, I almost can't believe this is a real part of our world's history. To be faced with so many challenges and be so blatantly disregarded (and even hated) simply because of your race is cruel and unfair. What Giora faced is an awful reality of people's misguided fear and poorly justified blame.
I must confess I was waiting somewhat impatiently for the end, and when I reached it I was pleasantly surprised to find it was far lighter than the rest of this biography.
After everything Giora went through, the return home ended up to be bitter sweet. His homeland was torn apart, but the remains can be perceived as proof of hope.
